In Office Teeth Whitening Compared to at Home Whitening

_MG_1212Your smile creates an immediate, subconscious, visual impact on people you meet. A brighter smile gives the impression of youth, vitality, radiant health, happiness, and warmth. A bright smile is perceived as a healthy smile. Studies show that 37%  people first notice your teeth above anything else of your over all appearance. Smiles Are Valuable!!!! Statistics reveal that we place a high value on our smiles. According to an American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry survey:

  • Virtually all adults (99.7%) believe a smile is an important social asset. 96% of adults believe an attractive smile makes a person more appealing to members of the opposite sex.
  • Three-quarters (74%) of adults feel an unattractive smile can hurt a person’s chance for career success.
  • And when respondents were asked, “What would you like to improve most about your smile?” The most common response was: Whiter & brighter teeth. If you are not happy with your smile, teeth whitening may be a good first step.

Staining on the teeth can be dissatisfying and embarrassing. Teeth stains can be classified in one of two ways: extrinsic or intrinsic. Extrinsic stains appear on the surface of your teeth. Intrinsic stains live between the microcracks in your enamel and deep within your dentin (the layer of your tooth underneath your enamel). Whitening toothpastes and mouth rinses may be able to remove some of the extrinsic stains on your teeth. But only teeth whitening agents can remove the stubborn extrinsic stains and the unsightly intrinsic stains that cause your teeth to look discolored.

At home whitening systems are a great quick alternative to glam up those pearly whites, and make them shine like the stars in a magazine. But there is no guidance by a dentist to monitor all this. $1.4 Billion dollars was spent on over-the-counter whitening products in the Untied States alone last year. Now one begins to wonder…. Is the patient overdoing it? Are there cavities that are going to get sensitive because of this material?  Are the gums becoming irritated? Will the teeth become as white as what is done in the dental office? Probably not as rapidly. It might take two or three months with over-the-counter products, whereas when we use products that can only be purchased in a dental office, those are going to work within three or four days to a week or so. In addition, over-the-counter product can be harmful, because it can be easily misused or overused.

Although over-the-counter treatments are less expensive, they may require a longer treatment period.  If you want quicker and more reliable results, you should ask your dentist about in-office whitening. In-office whitening may require more than one visit to the dentist’s office. Results from a dentist-supervised whitening procedure can last anywhere from one to five years (depending on your eating, drinking or smoking habits).

The most used whitening system in our office is take home custom tray and whitening gel, called Opalescence. It’s a method of using a custom fit tray that is first made to fit to the patients mouth, by being cut down to fit the contours of the individuals teeth properly . As to not cause any damage to the tissue around the tooth when once the whitening process has begun. Different variations of whitening gels can be provided, based off of sensitivity, reasoning, or desirability.

Opalescence gels contain an active whitening ingredient (either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide) that penetrates your enamel to get to discolored molecules. Oxygen molecules from the whitening agents react with the discolored molecules in your teeth, breaking the bonds that hold them together. The oxygen molecules spread, whitening the entire tooth. As a result, you are left with a brighter, whiter smile.

Regardless of the approach one takes to whitening their teeth, it is very important to take proper precautions and not over do the process.
